PhD position in Remote Sensing of Vegetation Phenology

29.11.2016 - University of Antwerp, Belgium

We have a PhD position open at the Biology Department of the University of Antwerp (Belgium) within the international 4-year ECOCROPHET project (Improved Ecosystem Productivity Modeling by Innovative Algorithms and Remotely Sensed Phenology Indicators), funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office. Partners in the project are the Belgian Meteorological Institute, the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’environnement (France), and Peking University (China).

The successful applicant will join the Research Centre of Excellence on Global Change Ecology and be supervised by Prof. Ivan Janssens and Dr. Manuela Balzarolo (https://www.uantwerpen.be/nl/projecten/global-change-ecology-uantwerpen-gce/). PhD salaries in Belgium are high relative to the cost of living.

Research description
The successful candidate will make use of new Earth Observation products and ecosystem productivity databases to improve the understanding of ecosystem phenology and ecosystem productivity. She/He will help in developing new phenology modules for Land Surface Models and in validating model simulations.

Profile
Applicants should have a master’s degree in (Bio-) Engineering, Geography, Physics, or related sciences, and should be skilled in geospatial analysis and programming.

Applications
Applications should be addressed to Dr. Manuela Balzarolo (manuela.balzarolo@uantwerpen.be) before December 31st. and should include a detailed CV and a letter of motivation (max 1 page).
