Research Assistant Geology / Geophysics

24.11.2016 - Department of Geology, University of Trier

The Department of Geology at the University of Trier, Germany, wishes to fill a post of Research Assistant (EG 13 TV-L, 75 %) for the time from 01.01.2017 (or as quickly as possible) until 31.10.2019. The position is part of an EU funded research project with the title: „New portable multi-sensor scientific instrument for non-invasive on-site characterisation of rocks from planetary surface and sub-surfaces”.

The project will be executed in collaboration with six partner institutions from Spain, France and Germany. At first, the geophysical and geological characteristics of potential mapping areas and test sites for on ground surveys with the new sensors of our consortium have to be evaluated based on published and/or other accessible data sets. This concerns in particular possible future landing sites of Mars missions. Further work is related to the elaboration of the obtained geophysical data from the selected test sites, cleaning of data sets from erroneous data and artefacts as well as their georeferenciation. Subsequently the data must be georeferenced and partly interpolated. They should be illustrated in geological/geo-physical profiles and as 3-D compilations (Preferentially with MATLAB). The results of our case studies should be compared with available geophysical/geological reference data and published in international journals. The holder of the position should contribute to the general project-related dissemination (e.g. within the project home page). Candidates without PhD will also be considered if highly eligible and they can be supported with respect to a doctoral thesis.

The University of Trier is committed to equal opportunities in employment, in particular to increasing the number of women in academic positions. Women are therefore encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.

Please send you applications with attached documents (CV, certificates and a short description of the scientific interests) until the 1th of Dec. 2016, per e-mail to Prof. Dr. Rolf Kilian (
