MSc and PhD Student Assistantships: Digital soil mapping and sensing

05.07.2017 - University of Guelph (Canada)

Assistantships are available for one/two MSc (for 2 years) and one PhD program (3 years) at the University of Guelph. The assistantships are available right way with actual degree starting from September 2017.

The larger project is about developing soil sampling design for calibration and validation of digital soil maps, digital soil mapping and uncertainty analysis and development and use of proximal soil sensors in digital soil mapping of southern Ontario.

The student(s) will work towards developing a novel sampling design for digital soil map calibration and validation, collect and analyze soil samples in laboratory, develop and use proximal soil sensors (particularly soil spectroscopy) for fast soil characterization, working on new digital soil mapping techniques, and development of cellular phone applications for soil science use. A knowledge on one or more areas of soil sampling design/spatial statistics, field works, laboratory analysis of soil properties, digital soil mapping/ soil sensing and proximal soil sensors, development of cell phone applications will be required. Knowledge on basic statistics, GIS, computer programming (e.g. R, Matlab) will be an asset. The project will involve field works (a driving license is required) in Southern Ontario area.

The student will be based at the School of Environmental Sciences ( at the Ontario Agriculture College ( at University of Guelph (, the center of East Canadian Agricultural research.

Please check the university website for application deadlines.
