Science Communication Workshop at the University of Cologne

WissKomm-Workshop an der Uni Köln

How can research findings be communicated in an exciting and understandable way?

This question was addressed in the workshop ‘From Findings to Feeds: Sharing Science Beyond Academia’, organised by Geoverbund ABC/J on 20 September 2024 at the Institute of Geology at the University of Cologne for the Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG) of Collaborative Research Centre 1211.

Under the direction of Tina Finsterbusch (Geoverbund ABC/J Coordination Office) and Marcel Bülow (Jülich Research Centre), the participating doctoral students developed key principles of science communication. These included:

  • the development of clear core messages,
  • the use of visual storytelling,
  • addressing different target groups,
  • and the opportunities and limitations of social media.

The seminar concept followed the approach of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik): first, the basics were taught in an e-learning module, followed by interactive exercises and discussions. This combination made it possible to work intensively on their own examples in the workshop, exchange experiences and give each other feedback.

The lively discussions and creative exercises made it clear that good science communication thrives on the courage to tell stories, on experimentation – and on people who want to make their research visible.

We would like to thank Hannah Hartung and Daniela Hülle for organising the workshop and all participants for their great commitment.
