Bonn becomes new location of the EU weather center ECMWF
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) will move from the UK to Germany in 2021, together with its approximately 150 employees. Bonn prevailed over Barcelona in the decisive selection round. The decision strengthens Bonn as a center of excellence and is trendsetting for the University of Bonn and its partners in the region.

Supercomputing Competence Centre

With the HPSC TerrSys, Geoverbund ABC/J offers direct access to the supercomputers of Forschungszentrum Jülich. Together with the associated Simulation and Data Laboratory (SimDataLab TerrSys) and in close cooperation with the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), the HPSC TerrSys provides professional and technical support for the geoscientists of the ABC/J region in implementing their research work with the help of the supercomputers. Clouds and Precipitation Competence Centre

The CPEX-LAB combines cloud- and precipitation-related expertise from the fields of meteorology, remote sensing, applied mathematics, engineering and computer science. The focus is on scientific and technical challenges in the observation and understanding of clouds and precipitation. Water Competence Centre

The HyCoGeo is intended to bundle the expertise of the Geoverbund on knowledge and insights into the dynamics of the hydrosphere, which will change significantly in the coming years. The main objectives include the bundling and networking of specialist expertise, the promotion of young scientists and the acquisition of new research projects. In addition to teaching and research cooperations, summer schools, virtual labs and "living labs" are to be established at three watercourses in the region for young scientists, as well as cooperations with regional practical partners, such as water associations.
