Global food security is an ever-increasing, worldwide problem. Over the coming decades, a changing climate, growing global population, rising food prices, and environmental stressors will have significant yet highly uncertain impacts on food security. With almost a billion people around the world who do not have access to a sufficient supply of nutritious and safe food, establishing global food security is important not only to hundreds of millions of hungry people, but also to the sustainable economic growth of these nations. It is essential to increase agricultural productivity through the use of modern irrigation techniques and other agricultural practices and to assess the complex impact of climate change on food security.

Numerical modeling is becoming an increasingly important tool for analyzing complex problems involving water flow, nutrient transport in the unsaturated zone, and irrigation management. This course is designed to familiarize participants with the principles and mathematical analysis of variably-saturated flow and transport processes, and the application of state-of-the-art numerical codes to site-specific subsurface flow and transport problems.

Course Description, Software, and Handouts

The course begins with a detailed conceptual and mathematical description of water flow and solute transport processes in the vadose zone. Alternative methods for describing and modeling the hydraulic functions of unsaturated porous media are also described.
"Hands-on" computer sessions provide participants an opportunity to become familiar with the Windows-based HYDRUS computer software packages, including several additional modules, such as ROSETTA. Emphasis is on the preparation of input data for a variety of applications, including flow and transport in a soil profile with a subsurface drip, modified atmospheric forcing and irrigation schemes. Course participants will have an opportunity to use the HYDRUS models for their own data..


The course introduces a new generation of Windows-based numerical models for simulating water, heat and/or solute transport in variably-saturated porous media. These include the HYDRUS-1D and HYDRUS (2D/3D) codes for one- and two-dimensional simulations, respectively, and the Rosetta code for estimating the soil hydraulic properties (and their uncertainty) from soil texture and related data. HYDRUS-1D and HYDRUS (2D/3D) are supported by interactive graphics-based interfaces for data-preprocessing, generation of unstructured as well as structured finite element grid systems, and graphic presentation of the simulation results.


Course material include lecture notes prepared by the instructor. Documentation of HYDRUS-1D and HYDRUS 2D/3D models can be downloaded from the HYDRUS website.

Registration & Costs

For everyone who is accepted as a participant, attendance is free of charge. The costs are covered by the PASCAL project which is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Drinks and lunch will be provided. All participants need to cover their expenses for travel and accommodation by themselves. Early career scientists may apply for travel grants.

To apply as a participant (HPC training, hackathon and/or side programme), please use the online registration (registration closed) form. Please note that we have prolonged the deadline until 31 August 2018 to make it possible for applicants to apply for the now provided travel grants for early career scientists! You will receive a notification after the deadline whether your application was successful and you were granted a place (probably until 14 September 2018). We hope for your understanding that we will ask for proofs of your accommodation and/or your flight/train/bus booking for Accra to ensure that granted places will not be lapsed but can be offered to someone from the waiting list.

Travel Grants

Geoverbund ABC/J provides a limited number of travel grants for early career scientists applying for PASCAL. You are considered early career scientist, if you are a master’s student or a doctoral candidate (PhD student) or received your PhD within the last three years. You may also apply for travel grants, if you have already registered. Master and PhD students need to submit a short support statement from their advisor/supervisor. Holder of the PhD degree have to submit a copy of their doctoral certificate indicating the date of graduation.
To apply for a grant, use the travel grant application form (sorry, application no longer possible). We cannot guarantee that all funds applied for will be granted and we reserve the right to cap them. Further arrangements regarding reimbursement of travel costs will be made after a candidate has been accepted for participation and has provided proofs of payment (e.g. invoice for flight ticket and/or accommodation booking).
