1. Purpose, nature and scope of the support

The International Exchange Programme aims to promote cooperation between scientists from the Geoverbund ABC/J (applicant) and from SAGES (co-applicant) by providing flexible financial support. For reciprocal visits (henceforth called ‘project’), which serve to explore possibilities to establish new or intensify already initiated research cooperation, scientists belonging to the Geoverbund ABC/J can apply for a financial contribution from the Geoverbund ABC/J towards travel, accommodation and research costs if they provide a project description and an invitation letter from a SAGES scientist.

Duration and Start Date

After receipt of the letter of approval, the project can start at any time; the latest start date for projects is 01.10.2020. The grant from the Geoverbund ABC/J must be spent within a period of 3 months after the start date. The start date is defined as any activity undertaken to advance the project. This includes in particular the booking of flights or the creation of a timetable for the project. The start date is not necessarily the date on which the exchange visits must have started.

Amount of the financial contribution

The funds made available by the Geoverbund ABC/J depend on the length of the visit and/or the research costs. Applicants can apply for a grant of up to EUR 3,360 (plus 19% VAT) for one-off trips of up to 3 months duration (including a maximum of EUR 1,680 for research costs, plus 19% VAT). The trips can be carried out by the applicant, the co-applicant and by members of their teams.

2. Timing and evaluation criteria

Opening date for applications: 31.01.2020
Closing date for applications: 01.05.2020
Latest project start date: 01.10.2020

Evaluation criteria

Applications will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria in particular:

  • scientific quality and relevance of the project description and project’s aims
  • previous research performance of the applicant and co-applicant
  • mutual benefit of cooperation
  • potential for long-term cooperation between applicant and co-applicant
  • the potential contribution to Geoverbund ABC/J’s science base
  • potential for strengthening cooperation at the level of both networks

All applications submitted in due form and time will be evaluated within a scientific review process. The assessment is carried out by the Steering Committee of Geoverbund ABC/J, which can also obtain external assessments or commission further persons for this purpose. Applicants will be informed immediately after completion of the review and approval process.

3. Eligibility details

Applicants and co-applicants:

  • must not have submitted a joint application for funding by SAGES,
  • must hold a completed doctorate at the time of application,
  • must have an employment contract with the respective Geoverbund/SAGES partner organisation for the duration of the project
  • must be based in their respective countries/institutions at the time of application
  • may not be current or former colleagues as the scheme is primarily intended to stimulate new collaborations between scientists in SAGES and Geoverbund,
  • must not be in a former supervisor relationship (doctoral student/supervisor) with each other, and
  • must each obtain a letter of support from the head of their institute/organisation

Only one application may be submitted per application round (deadline). Projects that have already been funded, including by third parties, are excluded from funding.

According to the evaluation criteria, the projects applied for must be suitable for establishing new collaborations or consolidating already initiated collaborations on a sustainable basis. The collaborations should be based on a single project.

The grants are primarily intended to support travel between the United Kingdom and Germany. Visits can be made in either direction, i.e. the visit will take place either at the applicant's or co-applicant's institution. Visits last a minimum of 1 week and a maximum of 3 months. In justified cases, travel to research areas outside the United Kingdom and Germany may also be requested.

The maximum grant per application is EUR 3,360 (plus 19% VAT). A total of EUR 12,000 (including VAT) is available for the current call for proposals.

The implementation of the Geoverbund ABC/J support programme for the International Exchange Programme with SAGES is the sole responsibility of the Geoverbund ABC/J. SAGES in turn publishes a corresponding call for proposals for the International Exchange Programme with the Geoverbund ABC/J, for which it bears sole responsibility.
