Join this 3-day workshop in person in Cologne with invited keynote & impulse talks, poster session, break-out groups, and lively discussions!

What type of Earth system observations do we need for improving forecasts in particular application areas - ranging from the urban-scale, over regional (sub-)km and global, storm-resolving to seasonal, coupled modeling? To answer this question, this workshop will go a step beyond the "classical" Observation System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) approach, which is typically applied in a non-systematic “trial-and-error” manner. We invite experts from Earth system observations, data assimilation, AI, and computational science to present and discuss methodologies to optimally design the future Earth observation system.

We welcome contributions in the form of posters and/or short impulse talks related to:

  • Current and planned overarching approaches for the evolution of Earth system observation systems
  • Using Machine learning or advanced Algorithmic methods for
  • The potential role of (AI-generated) Earth system model ensembles for Earth observation system design
  • Methodologies for deriving Earth system observation requirements in a quantitative, prioritized and systematic manner

Potential outcomes of the workshop are to

  • identify if there is a need for an internationally concerted development of methodologies for progressing the evolution of the Earth system observation systems
  • develop joint research paths for using Machine learning and Algorithmic methods for a systematic Earth system observation design

Registration is free of charge until October 15, 2025. You can find the registration here: https://survey.uni-koeln.de/index.php/164216?lang=en
