HErZ Summer School 2024 on vertical profiling of the troposphere

HErZ Summer School 2024 zur Vertikalprofilierung der Troposphäre

At the HErZ Summer School 2024 at Forschungszentrum Jülich, supported by the Geoverbund ABC/J, around 70 participants conducted intensive research into innovative methods for improving weather forecast models as part of the HErZ VITAL I campaign from 12 to 23 August. The focus was on both classic weather balloons and modern measurement methods, which are of particular interest to the German Weather Service (DWD).

The concept of the summer school, with a combination of theoretical lectures in the morning and practical "campaign time" in the afternoon, enabled an intensive exchange between around 50 students and 20 scientists. The participants had the opportunity to take measurements with meteorological drones and remote sensing methods and compare them with data from weather balloons and satellites.

A daily briefing provided space for discussions about initial results and the planning of further measurements. The two-week event concluded with the "Final Event", at which the results of the project groups were presented and evaluated in poster presentations. Participants were also able to network with potential future employers.
